The Akamas Peninsula remains one of Cyprus's last stretches of undeveloped coastline, a roadless wilderness where the Troodos foothills meet the Mediterranean. Within its protected waters lies the Blue Lagoon, a shallow bay enclosed by chalk-white cliffs and accessible exclusively by boat from Latchi Harbour, six nautical miles to the south. The lagoon's vivid cyan hue derives from sunlight refracting through fine calcium carbonate sediment suspended in water rarely deeper than four metres—a phenomenon that intensifies between May and September when phytoplankton levels drop and visibility extends beyond twenty metres. Commercial cruises from Latchi began in the early 1990s, shortly after the Akamas was designated a protected zone under Cypriot conservation law. Today, a dozen licensed operators run scheduled departures from the harbour's western quay, each vessel limited to seventy-five passengers under maritime authority regulations updated in 2024. Most itineraries combine the Blue Lagoon with stops at Manolis Bay and Turtle Beach, where loggerhead sea turtles nest from June through August. Onboard amenities vary: traditional wooden caïques offer open-air seating and rope-ladder access, while newer catamarans feature water slides, snorkel gear, and shaded upper decks. The lagoon itself is a geological curiosity. Its enclosing headlands are fossil-rich Lefkara chalk, deposited during the Miocene epoch when this entire region lay beneath a shallow sea. Erosion has carved the cliffs into arches and sea caves, several large enough to navigate by kayak at low tide. The seabed is a patchwork of Posidonia oceanica meadows—a UNESCO-recognised marine habitat that filters sediment and stabilises sand, sustaining populations of bream, mullet, and juvenile grouper.
